Anonymous Imitative gold Ducat ND (after 1350) MS62 PCGS, cf. Ives Plate XIII, 1 & 2 (for similar imitations), cf. CNI-VIIa.39 (for prototype), cf. Paolucci-29.1 (same), cf. Fr-1221 (same). In the name of Andrea Dandolo (1343-54). ΛNDR DΛNVLO | • S (retrograde) | V | Є | N | Є | T | I •, Doge kneeling left before cruder figure of St. Mark (standing right), receiving banner DV (diamond; stacked) to right / • SIT T (round decoration, degenerate X) P • Є DΛT Q TV | V GIS ISTЄ • DVCΛT •, Christ in glory (surrounded by mandorla), book of Gospels in left hand, raising right in benediction, four stars to left, five to right. An extremely fine style imitation of this most commonly copied Venetian Doge (though no indicated as such on the holder), the quality of execution and surprising literacy of the legends are quite stunning (the degraded X's giving its imitative status away). Likely produced prior to the 16th century in Frankish Greece or the Levant.
