Chios. Imitative debased gold Ducat ND (c. 1344-82) XF, 3.42g, cf. Fr-1221 and Paolucci-29.1 (for prototype). Struck in the name of Andrea Dandolo. ΛND (tiny K) | DΛNDVIO, Doge kneeling left before St. Mark (standing right), who hands him a banner, D (on side) VX (stacked) to right, to left S | (retrograde Z) | V (as triangle) | Є | (retrograde Z) | Є | T | I / SITT | XPЄ | DΛT | OT | V | (retrograde K) | ЄIS | ISTЄ | DVЄΛT, Christ in glory (surrounded by mandorla), book of Gospels in left hand, raising right in benediction, four stars to left, five top right. An intriguing type minted from extremely debased gold, but nonetheless boasting superb technical quality (but for the blundered legends) for one of these imitative issues. The fields continue to display a considerable amount of die polish lines and luster, while the flan itself remains almost fully round with all of the design elements present. An almost russet tone has additionally taken up around the legends, adding yet more eye-appeal to an already alluring coin. Comes with old Sotheby's pedigree.
