François I (1515-47) gold Ecu d'Or au Soleil ND AU58 NGC, Paris mint, 3.45g, Dup-771var (legends), Ciani-1071var (same), Fr-342. +FRACISCVS: ∂EI: GRACIA: FRANCORV: REX, crowned royal shield within inner border, truncated sun above / XPS: VINCIT: XPS: REGNAT: XPS: IMPERAT, cross-fleury, crown F in first and fourth angles. 2nd Type, 1st Emission (after 23 January 1515), with secret mark under 18th letter. A rather intriguing example of this popular hammered gold issue with a somewhat blundered spelling of the king's name and a lower case, sigma-shaped D in DEI that are made all the more peculiar by the fact that this issue was produced at the central mint in Paris. A lovely honey-yellow in hue with plentiful luster and a well-centered strike on a very circular flan.
