François I (1515-47) gold Ecu d'Or au Soleil ND AU58 NGC, Lyon mint, 3.40g, Fr-342, Dup-771var (with inner border on obverse), Ciani-1071var (same). +FRANCISCVS +∂EI: GRA: FRANCORVM: REX (clover?), crowned royal shield, sun above / +XPS +VINCIT: XPS: REGNAT: XPS: IMPERAT (clover?), cross-fleury, crowned F in second and fourth angles. 2nd Type, 1st Emission (from 23 January 1515). A very pleasing example for the grade, the fields notably free of marks, the legends full and sharp, and traces of the engravers guide prominent. A hearty honey-gold characterizes the fields with only the slightest bend detectable. Also to be noted is that this piece is struck with an internal border, which is absent from the sketches in both Duplessy and Ciani.
