Germany
"Crown Prince Wilhelm (II)" cast blackened iron Medal 1914-Dated UNC, cf. Zetzmann-4019 (for a smaller striking in silver). 96mm. 232.55gm. By R. Küchler and H. Grünthal. An absolutely massive World War I-era medal, the only non-silver example of which we have been able to locate in our research. The signature on the reverse Verl. Ball Berlin, appears to refer to the firm Robert Ball Nachfolger, which produced numismatic propaganda in Germany between 1915 and 1917. The present piece also displays another difference from the example in Zetzmann, as the artist's signature appears on the truncation of Wilhelm's portrait rather than between Mars' legs. Overall the piece has survived with only the most minor of surface abrasions, its blackened color quite lovely.
