Louis I (1342-82) gold Florin (Goldgulden) ND MS60 Details (Reverse Damaged) ANACS, Husz-512, CNH-62. • (crown) • +LODOV • | • ICI REX • (crown) •, Florentine lily / S • IOHA | ИИES B (crown), standing facing figure of St. John the Baptist. A clear imitation of the Florentine florin that had become so popular in European trade beginning in the mid-thirteenth century, this incredibly pleasing offering comes replete with ample die polish lines and remnants of the the engraver's guide still visible around the curve of the legends. The damage noted on the holder refers to a cut between the I and C in ICI, which very well could be a test cut made to verify the metal's purity. A splendid piece of history sure to find a place of prominence in any collection of medieval hammered gold.
