Papal States. Pius IX 5 Lire Anno XXIV (1870)-R MS62 NGC, Rome mint, KM1385. An expertly-executed example, as is clearly attested by the numerous die cracks on the obverse, pointing as they do to a die clearly under strain. Amidst the sea of satiny silver surfaces, elements of the reverse design are detectable on the obverse, most notably the silhouette of the wreath (around Pius' bust) and the bottom of the 1 from the date (below Pius' chin).
