Parma. Maria Luigia (Maria Louise) gold 40 Lire 1815 Fine/AU - ex jewelry, KM-C32. A rather charming and rare gold two-year issue struck in the name of Napoleon's second wife. Although the obverse displays heavy signs of handling and contact marks (with a surprising amount of residual luster and lack of where around the peripheries), the reverse retains a largely AU appearance with reflectivity still visible in the fields. This contrast in condition, together with several compressions on the rim around 12 o'clock and 9 o'clock, suggest that this coin was almost certainly previously housed in a pronged bezel, with the obverse facing in contact with outside elements and the reverse more or less protected. Nevertheless a desirable type free from the soldering, rim filing, or puncturing so often encountered in ex-jewelry pieces. Comes with old dealer's flip.
