Sicily. Carlo di Borbone gold Trade Oncia 1738 MS62 NGC, Palermo mint, KM154, MIR-564/4. A handsome and difficult type to acquire in Mint State grades, this pleasing golden specimen exhibits strong details on the obverse, while evincing similar fineness of execution on the reverse, if not somewhat obscured by a flurry of adjustment marks. While the last numeral of the date does look quite like the letter S, making an ascription of 1738 a easy mistake, such a date is not recorded for the type, and it seems more likely that this is merely a hastily engraved 9. Regardless, a piece worthy of a place of prominence in any collection of Italian coinage.
