Venice. Domenico Contarini (1659-1675) silver Osella Anno 9 (AD 1667) VF Details (Plugged) NGC, 9.51g, KM-Unl., Paolucci II, 150. Alessandro Salomon or Agostino Soranzo as mintmaster. Struck for Crete. S • M • VEN • DOMIN • CONT • D •, Doge kneeling right before St. Mark (standing left), receiving banner; mintmaster's initials below / SIT TVTA SIDERE CRETA, Madonna and child with 16-pointed radiate star; date in exergue below. A quite rare Osella that exhibits a pleasant slate gray hue with appropriate golden tones around the Madonna and child. The S in SIDERE shows strong evidence of being recut due to a mount removal or attempted puncture, which does not appear to have pierced through the coin, as no evidence of repair is detectable at the corresponding point on the opposite side of the coin. Mislabelled on the slab as 1668, rather than 1667.
