Spanish Netherlands
Gelderland. Philip II of Spain Daalder 1558 XF - surface hairlines, PVC residue, Dav-8492. A much nicer piece than is usually encountered in this crudely produced series, the fields still emitting a champagne tinged luster with some lightly purple hues on the highpoints. Even with a clear combination of reengraved dies and die shifts, the legends remain remarkably crisp and legible with a bit of careful study, a contribution of a well-executed strike that seems suited to the appealing heft of the coin. The PVC on the reverse is relatively minimal and contained, likely from an old holder, and appears easy to remove.
