Australian Polymer Test Notes with Silver Square Hologram. Two Examples. We are pleased to offer a pair of polymer test notes from Australia that were developed in the 1970s and were designed to incorporate new technology in the ongoing battle between banknote printers and the world's numerous counterfeiters. The goal was to produce a note that could not be photographed and thus could not be forged. In a collaborative effort between the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), the first polymer notes incorporating optical variable devices (or holograms) and a plastic film coating were produced. Over a period of ten years, these notes were tested and refined with the first polymer notes actually placed into circulation in 1988. The two notes we are offering this evening are tangible evidence of the long and innovative process to use technology to stave off the increasingly sophisticated skills of modern counterfeiters. The design used was provided by the RBA - birds in flight - using a hologram in the shape of silver square. Both examples grade PMG Very Fine 30. This is a great opportunity for the student of the evolution of modern banknote technology. We last sold a single example of this test note, which graded PMG About Uncirculated 53 with surface damage noted, in 2016 at our CSNS World Currency Signature Auction for $1,997. HID08701242017
