A note that could enter either a world or United States collection as the US acquired these islands from neutral Denmark on March 31, 1917 for $25,000,000 in gold. The reasoning behind the purchase was to help guard the approach to the Panama Canal and also to keep the islands from a possible seizure by the Germans during World War I.
