Mozambique Banco Nacional Ultramarino 50 Mil Reis 2.1.1908 Pick 29Bs Face and Back Specimens. A previously unlisted example, as the Banco Nacional Ultramarino was known to have issued only the 2500 and 5000 Reis denomination for the 1908 series. The familiar portrait of Vasco da Gama is featured, along with brilliant colors. Lourenço Marques (modern-day Maputo, Mozambique) office of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino is seen as expected for this series. Larger denominations were used on the previous and subsequent issues, though vault stocks may not have required those denominations to be printed in 1908. We previously offered one example of just the face Specimen of this design, which realized $7,050 in 2012. However upon closer inspection, this example shows a green-yellow-pink-yellow underprint pattern on the face, compared to the green-blue-pink-blue-yellow underprint on the 2012 example. This variety may very well be a Color Trial Specimen as well. The face is PMG About Uncirculated 55. The back has a split and previous mounting noted, and is PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.
