DC-8b $1 1878. Charlton indicates that a plausible reason for preparing a new issue of $1 and $2 notes so soon after the introduction of the Dominion notes was the counterfeiting of the Toronto $1 notes as the catalogue notes, "If the purpose of the 1878 issue was to improve security, it failed badly. The ones were raised to resemble $4 notes and the $2 notes were extensively counterfeited." This note, payable at Toronto, comes from the first issue with the scalloped borders.
