Germany Wildleder (Suede) Stoffgeld Osterwieck am Harz 500 Mark 4.12.1922. Osterwieck was at this time the center of the leather industry in Germany. The Reichsbank banned Notgeld on April 24, 1922 and imposed significant penalties for non-compliance. The city of Osterwieck was in financial difficulty and decided to exploit a loophole in the new law. Exotic emergency money could be sold, but not as emergency money. However, it could be given as a receipt for a "donation." The city hired artist Hermann Rabel to prepare the designs that were printed on leather and suede at the firm of A.W. Zickfeldt, a local printer. The leather and suede was provided free of charge by eight local companies. This lot comes with a colorful and highly detailed piece of Stoffgeld depicting local families' coats of arms, the printed signature of "H. Rabel," and the imprint of A.W. Zickfeldt. Included with the note is the original printed "window" folder the note was "issued" in. The folder also has the A.W. Zickfeldt imprint and the name of artist H. Rabel. Both the note and the folder are serial number 6. The note grades Choice Crisp Uncirculated and the 8.125 by 5.75 inch folder is in very nice condition. The item count for this lot is two.
