From the Lee Rousseau Collection.
Alexander the Molossian was the king of Epeiros and an uncle of Alexander the Great. A protégé of Philip II, it was at Alexander's wedding to his own neice, Cleopatra, that the king of Macedonia was assassinated. In 334 BC, the citizens of Taras called on Alexander to assist them in fighting the native tribes of southern Italy, the Lucani and the Bruttii. This silver nomos was struck at that time in order to pay his troops, perhaps at Taras itself or in the nearby Bruttian town of Lokroi. Vlasto attributed Alexander's production of silver to an Epirote mint, but examples are never found there, known find spots being located only in southern Italy.
