Alfred the Great (871-899), silver Penny, third coinage (c.880-899), Canterbury Mint, moneyer Diarwald, two line type, small cross pattée, circles and legend surrounding, + ELFRED REX DORO, diamond shape Os in legend both sides indicative of Canterbury dies, rev. three pellets across centre, moneyer name in two lines, pellet stop above and below, DIARV/ALD MO, weight 1.55g (N.638; S.1069). Toned, one tiny rim split, otherwise almost extremely fine and rare with the mint name in legend.
