Hong Kong, British Colony, George VI (1937-52), bronze Cent, 1941, Royal Mint (KM 24). Rare, in NGC holder graded MS63BN.

One of the great rarities of the Hong Kong series, the 1941 Cent remains highly elusive. After being struck at the Royal Mint the Cents were divided into three shipments. One was actually retained and melted down by the British government to aid the war effort. Another was sunk at sea en route to Hong Kong, perhaps the victim of an enemy torpedo. The last was delivered to Hong Kong but captured by the Japanese military when the island surrendered in December 1941. It is thought that coins in the "Japanese" batch were also melted down though a small number of cents clearly survived either in the UK or Japan or both.
