MHTPOΠO KAICAPIAC / ЄT B Septimius Severus, togate, driving slow quadriga to right, holding eagle-tipped scepter with his right hand and reins with his left; in field above, Mount Argaios. BMC -. Henseler 351. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Leypold -. SNG von Aulock -, cf. 6453 (quadriga left). Sydenham suppl. 419c. Extremely rare and of great interest. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.

The reverse of this interesting issue shows the victorious Septimius Severus in front of the Mount Argaios. It must have been struck shortly after the defeat of the forces of Pescennius Niger against the army of Septimius Severus at Cyzicus in mid 193 and Nikaia in the winter of 193/4 and boasts the loyalty of Caesarea to the winner of the civil war.
