British Commemorative Medals, John Drummond, Duke of Melfort (1649-1714) and Colin Lindsay, Count of Balcarres (1652-1722), octagonal brass jeton, by the Roettiers, 1695, restruck from the original dies, c.1800, by Matthew Young, coronets over arms and supporters, 39mm., very fine and scarce
John Drummond (1649-1714) was Secretary of State in Scotland under James II and followed him in exile. James II gave him the title of Duke of Melfort in 1692, for services to the Stuart cause. Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres (1652-1722) was the King's Treasurer of Scotland. He also went into exile after the Glorious Revolution, but was allowed to return to Scotland in 1700.
