(x) Henry I (1100-35), Penny, 1.37g, Full Face / Cross Fleury type, London, Wulfward, + henricvs rex :, crowned and draped bust facing, rev. + pvlpard: on lvn :, cross fleury with annulet in centre (SCBI 16 (Norweb) 299, this coin; same dies as Brooke, NC 1913, pl. xviii, I (= the coin from the Bournmouth find, c.1901, in BNJ XIX, p.94, subsequently Carlyon-Britton sale, lot 1351); Andrew, NC 1901, p.313; cf. BMC 67; N.866; S.1271), small edge split at 8 o'clock and officially incised at 11 o'clock, otherwise good very fine, rare thus.
Provenance:
Spink Australia auction 27, March 1989
Norweb, part 1, Spink auction 45, 13 June 1985, lot 108
E P Armitage collection, purchased by Spink, May 1960

This coin is possibly to be allied with that in the Sotheby auction, 28-29 May 1891, lot 20 (vide Andrew p.313). The pedigree given in SCBI 16 is incorrect. The specimen in the Deakin sale of 1905, lot 8, also alluded to by Andrew, would appear to be yet another of this type and moneyer.
Estimate: £1000 - £1200
