GREAT BRITAIN
5 £ 1937, London. Av. GEORGIVS D G BR OMN REX F D IND IMP. Bare head left. Rv. 1937. Saint George slaying the dragon. Spink 4074; Fr. 409. AU. 39.90 g. 5001 ex. PCGS PR 67 DCAM
Born on December 14th, 1895 the same day as the anniversary of the death of his great-grandfather Albert, the Prince of York took the same name. Albert Frederick Arthur George is then fourth in the order of succession.
It was on December 11th, 1936 that he became king, taking over from his elder brother Edward VIII who had abdicated, and took the name of George VI. He finds himself quickly in the turmoil of the Second World War. The royal couple decided to stay in London despite the bombings, consolidating their popularity. At the end of the war, the British empire gradually dissolved, giving way to independent republics grouped together, for those who wanted it, into an association of states called the Commonwealth.
Troubled by health problems, the king underwent many surgeries during the last years of his reign, and died on February 6th, 1952 at the age of 56, leaving room for the youngest queen, Elizabeth II.
Struck on the occasion of the coronation of George VI, this is the only 5 Pounds coin struck for this king. Our piece is of breathtaking quality: certified PCGS PROOF 67 ULTRA CAMEO. Only four certified examples in equivalent quality at NGC and PCGS.
Ex. Heritage Auctions 3019, 27 April 2012, lot 24829. Sold graded by NGC and then crossed to PCGS.
