At the beginning of the 17th century, the Po Delta had been transofrmed to prevent the neighboring lands from flooding. These modifications impacted on the boundaries between the Papal States and the Republic of Venice which created conflicts between their inhabitants. This was solved only in 1753 when both governments agreed on a treaty redefying their boundaries.
