Enrique IV, 1454-1474. Enrique d'or ND S, Sevilla. Obv. ENRICVS QA-RTVS DEI. Crowned king on throne. Rev. ENRICVS REX CASTELLE ET. Inverted Castilla y Leon coat of arms within polylobe. Fr. 116. AU. 4.53 g. RRR PCGS AU 55
Henry IV access the throne in 1454. In the 1460s, the Castilian nobility were disappointed by their king and thought that his daughter and the heiress to the throne Jeanne was not legitimate. As such they pushed him to repudiate and name his half-brother Alphonse as legitimate heir in 1464, who then took the title of Prince of Asturias. But King Henry IV quickly started recovering the support for the royal pretensions of his daughter Jeanne. The followers of Alfonso proclaimed him king in Avila in 1465, setting off a civil war and rallying the cities of Burgos, Toledo and Seville. Alphonse died suddenly in 1468 and his sister Isabelle took her place at the head of the rebels. She succeeded in negotiating with Henry IV the definitive repudiation of Jeanne and succeeded him in 1474 under the name of Isabella the Catholic.
Extremely rare variety with reversed Castilla y Léon coat of arms.
