Tiberius. A.D. 14-37. AR denarius (19 mm, 3.62 g). Laureate head of Tiberius right / PONTIF MAXIM, Livia, as Pax, seated right, holding scepter and olive branch. Cf. RIC I 30 for prototype. Rare and historically interesting. Toned. Fine.

A contemporary Indian imitation of a 'Tribute Penny'. Roman imports of exotic goods and spices from India in the early centuries A.D. were paid for in Roman coins that flooded peninsular India. Local traders were thus familiar with the 'Tribute Penny of Tiberius', and in order to cater to the local demand for silver coinage numerous contemporary imitations were made.
