Bhima. 6th century A.D. AR dramma (13 mm, 0.64 g). Bust of king right, wearing 'open rectangle' crown topped by a crescent; Brahmi legend Sri Bhi(ma) to right / Fire altar flanked by two seated attendants. Pieper 943. Extremely rare specimen, which is highly important as it clarifies the reading of the king's name. Small chip on edge. Very fine.

These small enigmatic coins were discovered in Sind, and have been attributed to a local Hunnic kingdom or post-Hunnic minor dynasty ruling in the 6th century. The ruler's name appears before his face in only a handful of coins. Tandon reads it as Sri Bhima, while Bhandare proposed Sri Amita. Our specimen clearly shows Bhi, so Bhima is the correct reading.
