Akbar was the third Mughal emperor, and credited for unifying his diverse subjects into a composite empire that lasted 300 years. He came to the throne at the age of 13 years after the death of his father Humayun, yet went on to rule for almost 50 years. A successful warrior, Akbar also encouraged inter-religious discussions and supported the arts. Even though he was illiterate himself, his personal library contained 20,000 books and manuscripts. He was the greatest of the Great Mughals.
