Late 19th century. Brass medal (29 mm, 9.41 g). Krishna standing on left, playing his flute; his consort Radha standing on right; each standing on a lotus, rudimentary tree to right; Bengali legend Radha Krishna to left; Devanagari legend Radha Krishna to right / Goddess Kali with four arms, trampling on prostate husband Shiva; Kali holds raised scimitar in upper right hand, a severed head in upper left hand which drips blood into bowl held in lower left hand; she is flanked by Devanagari legend Mala mata/ Kali mata (Mother Kali). This combination of legends is not recorded by Mitchiner. For the obv. legend, cf. Mitchiner (2012) 105; for the rev. legend, cf. Mitchiner (1998) 401. Scarce. A wonderful depiction of Hindu deities on both sides, showing a mixing of iconography from northern India (Radha Krishna) and eastern India (Kali). Very fine.

This religious token was minted in Calcutta during the late 19th century under British rule, when locals gave it as a gift during Hindu festivals. Traces of red sindoor (traditional vermilion used in Hindu ceremonies) are still visible on the obverse.
