An important and rare large blue- and sancai-glazed pottery Figure of an elegant Court Lady
The figure is superbly modelled, standing on a flat base, wearing a full-length blue-glazed dress mottled with white and yellow-brown in "Bakik" technique. Her neck, head and hair are unglazed. Her eyes and small mouth are finely modelled, her head tilting slightly to the side on rounded shoulders. Her full, black-pigmented hair is gathered in a net with two chignons on top of her head in yellow. Her arms are bent, holding a small dog, typical of the period. The glaze is finely crackled and iridescent.
Height: 56.5cm
Style of: Tang (618-906) 8th century OXFORD Authentication states 'date of last firing was less than 100 years ago' (Sample No C118g85)
This figure shows the court-Lady 'Li-knei-fei'. She was warm-hearted and stout. Due to her privileged status at the Emperor's court, avoirdupois (physical opulence) got an ideal for beauty during the Tang-dynasty. Not only the size of this figure is exceptional, also the blue cobalt-glaze is outstanding. Cobalt was really rare and to find it as glaze is even scarcer.
