Superbly carved from a flat stone, the mythical beast lies on its well defined clawed paws, facing forward, with a grinning mouth and intense oval eyes, framed by striated brows. Its back decorated with both incised archaic motifs and in low relief archaic scrolls, with a bifurcate tail, ending in a smooth curl. Calcified in some areas indicating great age.

Length: 12cm, Width: 6cm

Style of: Western Zhou (1100 BC – 771 BC), age determination uncertain

The decoration is characteristic of the Zhou period but also ascribed to the Sung period where some imitations followed.
