A rare interesting two-handled white jade cup
Well-carved with deep round sides rising from a slightly splayed foot to an everted rim, the sides flanked by a sturdy pair of handles with a flat rectangular top decorated in low relief with dragons, the sides decorated with Taotie masks within a high-relief band. Three high-relief rectangular blocks mid mask. Just above the bottom a moulded repetitive pattern rock between waves. The white jade with brown mottling and calcination. Some age cracks.
Height: 6cm, Length: 16cm
Style of: Late Song / early Ming (12, 13 or 15 century), age determination uncertain
The processing of the jade indicates great age, yet the repetitive pattern rock between waves is only known to be used during the early Ming period.
