The FitzGeralds were a powerful Anglo-Irish family who survived conflict with another great Anglo-Irish family, the Ormondes. The Eighth Earl, Garrett or Gerald, took over as Deputy for Richard Plantangenet, Duke of York in 1477. Ruling "with vigour and justice*" he was powerful and shrewd enough that he survived both his Anglo-Irish enemies and a stint in the Tower. (Hull, E. A History of Ireland and Her People. 1931. p 154.)
