Berthold Nebel (1889-1964) was an American sculptor who designed this medal six months before the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. A Wikipedia article provides a quote from him about the reason for this graphic design: "Modern warfare has developed to such a degree that civilization may vanish from the earth unless there is a better understanding among nations. This medal was designed to help impress that thought which I believe is uppermost in our minds."
