Elizabeth I. 1558-1603. AR shilling. 5.43 gm. 31 mm. First issue. Lis i.m. Tower mint. 1559-1560. Bust 1B, wire line inner circle, pearls on bodice; ELIZABETH D G ANG FRA Z HIB REGI / Shield over long cross fourchée; POSVI DEVM A DIVTOR EM MEV. S. 2548. N. 1985. BCW LS-2E:- (Lis 5, Lion 1, Leaf 1, Shield 4, Legend 5/41/6/23). Good Very Fine; beautiful old tone; tiny flaw behind shoulder on obverse; old scuff and small peck mark on reverse in second quarter, light hairline scratches in third quarter margin; marks are old and well toned. A beautiful example.

The very first issue of Elizabeth is particularly elusive in attractive condition; note the Standard Catalog valuation of £2500. This coin offers a well struck portrait on a large flan generally free of the damage that is so often present for this issue.
