UMAYYAD: AE Fals (2.51g), [Al-Quds] (Jerusalem), AH 80-90s. Dome/Menorah on the obverse. A-163.1, Walker-605. One of the most attractive specimens we have seen, full dome/menorah is unusually visible, extremely fine. Rare.

The pictorial image resembles both an Islamic dome and a menorah, with the dome seeming more likely. This coin was minted after about the time the Dome of the Rock was built, which could make this coin a commemorative piece for its building. As for the menorah being a symbol for Jews, this coin would be primary evidence for the toleration of the Jews by the Muslims, in contrast to their persection under the pre-Islamic Roman era. The menorah is, however, less likely due to the branching ends that are connected by a line, resembling a dome's base more than a menorah.

Estimate: 140-160
