CARIA. Antioch ad Maeandrum. Circa 168/150-133 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.15 g, 12 h), Damokrates, magistrate. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ANTIOXEΩN ΔAMOKPATHΣ Eagle, with closed wings, standing left on maeander pattern; before, lion skin draped over club; all within oak wreath. BMC -. Lanz 20 (1981), 245 (same obverse die). Leschhorn, Lexicon of Greek Coin Inscriptions -. McClean -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Lockett -. SNG von Aulock -. Weber -. Winterthur -. Unpublished save for the Lanz piece, the second and by far the best known example. Sharply struck and fresh, a wonderful coin. Good extremely fine.

What makes this coin particularly interesting, in comparison to the previous lot, is the shortened ethnic and the fact that the Stephanophoric reverse has been changed from a laurel wreath to an oak wreath. The style is also distinctly later, and the somewhat clumsy rendering of the oak wreath is reminiscent of the Stephanophoric tetradrachms struck at Herakleia ad Latmon, with which it might be contemporary.
