CARIA. Antioch ad Maeandrum. Circa 168/150-133 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.05 g, 12 h), Moschas, son of Xanthos, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo to right with bow and quiver over his shoulder. Rev. ΑΝΤΙΟΧΕΩΝ - MOΣXAΣ / ΞANΘOY Zebu bull standing left with palm frond before; all within maeander pattern border. BMC -. Of the highest rarity, the second and best known example. A very interesting issue of flamboyant late Hellenistic style. Patchy toning, otherwise, good very fine.


This issue replaces the Stephanophoric wreath on the reverse with a maeander pattern border, thus adapting the type to a more local design.
