Byzantine Weights, Circa 6th-7th century. Weight of 6 Ounkia (Orichalcum, 46 mm, 158.79 g, 2 h), a thick discoid commercial weight with centering holes, raised rims and double-grooved edge. Γᴑ S engraved in outline, Latin cross above; within stylized wreath within scalloped border; all within raised circle within raised outer rim. Rev. Cruciform monogram of NE-XA-ΛE or NE-AX-EΛ; all within raised outer rim. Bendall -, cf. 115 (with silver inlays and a plain reverse). MAH -, cf. 22 and 28 (with plain reverse). Pera -. Very rare. A large and impressive piece with an interesting reverse monogram. Some deposits, otherwise, very fine.
