Megaris, Megara.
Late 3rd –early 2nd century. AE tetrachalkon, 7.36 g. Laureate head of Apollo right / MEΓA PEΩΝ five-stringed kithara. BCD Peloponnesos 31. RRR. Very fine. The chronology of the Apollo/kithara issue is difficult. The presence of an example in the building fill of the Middle Stoa in the Agora means that it had to have been issued prior to 183, thus dating the series to the early 2nd century at the latest. However, other examples of this series are very different and simply must be later in date. Some surely can be related to the Apollo/tripod issues dating to the second quarter of the 1st century, others may well even be Hadrianic.
