Achaia, Achaian League.
Pellene, 188-146 BC. Æ tetrachalkon, 4.39 g. Zeus, nude, standing left, with Nike on right hand and long sceptre in left; in right field: ΠΟ / Achaia seated left, with wreath and long sceptre with her left. BCD Peloponnesos 604. Very fine. Warren's research (Warren 1991, p. 153) shows that Pellene struck an immense series of tetrachalkoi under the Achaean League, larger than any of the other 45 mints known to have produced coins of this type. She suggests that one possible explanation for this vast output could be that Pellene served as a rallying point for the League's military forces.
