KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 16.95 g, 12 h), uncertain mint in western Asia Minor, c. 300-280. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on backless throne, holding eagle with closed wings on his outstretched right hand and long scepter in his left; in field to left, kantharos. Meydancikkale 505. Price 2719b (these dies). Very rare, nicely toned and of particularly bold style. Reverse struck slightly off centre, otherwise, good extremely fine.

The Herakles head on this coin has an almost demonic intensity about it – he almost looks like some renaissance bravo spoiling for a fight with some rival!
