KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 17.25 g, 12 h), Mesembria, c. 250-175. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on throne with elaborate legs, holding eagle with closed wings on his outstretched right hand and long scepter in his left; in field to left, close to Zeus's right leg, thyrsos; below throne, Corinthian helmet to left. Price 971 (thyrsos unnoted, but apparently visible on pl. xliii). Boldly struck and with a powerful head of Herakles. Struck on a slightly tight flan, and with minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
