KINGS OF CAPPADOCIA. Ariarathes IV, circa 220-163 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18.5 mm, 4.15 g, 12 h). Draped bust of Ariarathes IV to right, wearing high bashlyk ornamented with a star, and a torc around his neck. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ | ΑΡΙΑ-ΡΑΘΟΥ Athena standing left, wearing helmet and chiton, holding Nike standing left on her right hand, resting her left hand on a shield by her side, and with a transverse spear behind her. Cf. Simonetta (Ariarathes VI) p.32, 2 (but lacking a monogram. Apparently unique and unpublished save for its previous auction appearance). Toned and with an extraordinarily fine and powerful youthful portrait. Slight roughness and a few minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
