SELEUKID KINGS. Antiochos VI Dionysos, 144-142 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 16.46 g, 12 h), Tarsos, 143/2-c.142. Diademed head of Antiochos VI to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ-ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ / ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ-ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΥ "Pyre of Sandan": Sandan standing right on horned lion between two omphaloi; all on a garlanded altar beneath a pyramidal baldacchino; below, two monograms. Cf. SC 1996 (same types, but the monograms on the reverse differ from those here and this piece is struck from a different obverse die. Extremely rare, one of three known examples of this type, but with these monograms, unique. Somewhat rough and corroded surfaces, otherwise, good very fine.
From a German private collection.
This coin is quite extraordinary! It is one of three known examples of this type from Tarsos: the other two both have two monograms in the exergue on the reverse and are both struck from the same pair of dies (SC 1996). However, the present coin is struck from different dies and has different monograms, thus showing that it comes from a second issue.
