Septimius Severus, 193-211. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 7.51 g, 6 h), Rome, 210. SEVERVS PIVS AVG Laureate head of Septimius Severus to left. Rev. VICTORIAE AVGG Victory, holding whip in her right hand and reins in her left, driving quadriga galloping to right. Biaggi –. BMC –. Calicó 2559a. Cf. RIC 209 (head of Severus to right). Extremely rare, possibly the second example of the type known, with the other in Leu 28, 5 May 1981, 491, but from different dies. Some very minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
From the DeBakey Collection, and from those of the MoneyMuseum, Zurich, Triton XVIII, 6 January 2015, 1155, and of Götz Grabert, LHS 97, 10 May 2006, 43, ex Giessener Münzhandlung 69, 18 November 1994, 638.
Left facing portraits of Septimius Severus are particularly uncommon: this is an especially attractive example.
