SICILY. Gela. Circa 490/85-480/75 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 19 mm, 8.65 g, 10 h). Nude and bearded warrior riding right on prancing horse; wearing high helmet and holding spear in his upraised right hand and the reins in his left. Rev. [C]E - ΛΑ (retrograde) Forepart of man-headed bull (Acheloös) to right. Jenkins, Gela 28 (O9/R11). Kraay-Hirmer 156 (same dies). A beautifully toned and sharply struck example. Slight traces of overstriking, otherwise, good extremely fine.
