Thessaly, Perrhaiboi, obol, c. 460 BC, forepart of wolf to left; above, monogram, rev., ΠΕ, head of bridled horse to right; all within incuse square, 0.94g, die axis 6.00. (Weber 2891, same dies; BCD 1236, same reverse die), extremely fine and extremely rare, the most complete known example. Provenance: Nomos 8, 22 October 2013, lot 136 (ex-European collection, formed before 2005). This is the only known example to reveal the full monogram on the obverse which can be read as either ΜΑΚ or ΛΑΚ. In the Nomos catalogue the suggestion was made that it could refer to the Macedonians who were on Perrhaiboi's northern border and might therefore imply some form of an alliance between the two states.
