Titus (79-81), aureus, as Caesar, Rome, 76, T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS, laureate head right, rev., COS V, heifer walking right, 7.31g, die axis 7.00 (RIC 868; BMC 187; Calico 734; C. 53; Foss 19), toned, good very fine. The reverse type has been linked to the heifer of Myron, the famous 5th century BC Athenian sculptor. While Mattingly in BMC stated "The heifer is unquestionably the famous statue of Myron which had been placed by Augustus in the 'Porticus Apollinis' and was transferred by Vespasian to the temple of Peace" (BMC p. xxxviii), Carradice and Buttrey in the revised edition of RIC are more circumspect and suggest the link to Myron is speculative (RIC p. 30). Nevertheless the reverse draws inspiration from the earlier series of aurei depicting bulls or heifers issued by Augustus..
