Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AE Sestertius, 18 BC. D/ OB/CIVIS/SERVATOS in three lines across field; inner laurel wreath flanked by laurel branches. R/ T QVINCTIVS CRISPINVS III VIR AAAFF around large SC. RIC 327 C. 508. AE. g. 24.84 mm. 36.00 RRR. Very rare. A superb example. Enchanting golden 'Tiber' patina. VF/Good VF.

T. Quinctius Crispinus Sulpicianus, whom the poet-historian Velleius Paterculus described as 'concealing a singular immorality with a stern brow,' was a member of one of the obscure noble families which Augustus revived into prominence. In 9 BC he became consul ordinarius along with Nero Claudius Drusus. Implicated by Augustus to the Senate in 2 BC as one of Julia's numerous lovers, he was punished with banishment.
